Moskovich, Wolf
Wolf Moskovich (born on 07/04/1936 in Bolgrad, Ukraine) is Professor Emeritus, formerly Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Russian and Slavic Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1976- 2004). His main fields of interest include Slavic studies (Ukrainian studies in particular), Jewish culture and history in Eastern and Central Europe (Yiddish studies in particular), interrelations between Jews and Christians, and languages and cultures in contact. He studied at Chernivtsi State University, received his Ph.D. (1965) from the Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages, and Dr. Hab. (1971) from the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Leningrad. Prior to emigration to Israel he worked in 1965 - 1974 as Director of the Laboratory for Information Processing and Retrieval and Senior Researcher at the State Committee for Inventions and Discoveries of the USSR in Moscow and simultaneously taught in Moscow State University and other institutions. He emigrated to Israel in October 1974.In 1975-76 he was Professor at Tel Aviv University and in 1976 – 2004 of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has been Visiting Professor at the universities of London, Oxford, Cornell, Pennsylvania, Rome (Sapienza and Tor Vergata), Moscow (MGU) and Bratislava. He has over 300 publications, including 12 monographs, mainly in the fields of theoretical and Slavic philology, computational linguistics and Jewish and Ukrainian culturology. He serves as Editor in Chief of the book series Jews and Slavs (volumes 1-22, Jerusalem,1993 – 2011) .Member of the International Committee of Slavists since 1993. Honours received include: Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, A. Pushkin medal for outstanding services to Russian language and culture and V. Zhabotinsky medal for promoting mutual understanding among nations .A Festschrift for Wolf Moskovich appeared in 2006: S Schwarzband et al. (Eds.), Quadrivium.Festschrift in Honour of Professor Wolf Moskovich, Jerusalem, The Hebrew University.
