Mardešić, Sibe

Graduated from the high school in Split (1945.) and served two years in the Yugoslav Navy. Studied theoretical mathematics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (PMF) in Zagreb and obtained the BSc degree in 1950 and the PhD degree at the University of Zagreb in 1957 with a thesis entitled Homology properties of some function spaces. At PMF became Assistent (1951.), Docent (1960.), Associate Professor (1962.) and Professor (1966.), retired (1991), Professor Emeritus (1996). Visiting Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton during two academic years (1957./59), Visiting Professor in Seattle, WA (1965./66. and 1987.), Heidelberg (1971./72.), Pittsburgh, PA (1972./73.), Salt Lake City, UT, and Lexington, KY (1977./78.), L'Aquila (1979.), Tsukuba (1981.), Perugia (1985 and 1990.), Norman, OK (1987) and Milan (1993.).

Field of research: Topology, especially dimension theory, shape theory and homology theory. Has published 148 scientific papers, 39 professional papers and 4 books (including the monographs: Shape Theory (coauthor: J. Segal), North Holland and Strong shape and homology, Springer). Wrote more than 450 reviews for Mathematical Reviews and Zentralblatt für Mathematik. Main scientific contributions: the factorization theorem in dimension theory, theorems on continuous images of linearly ordered continua, founding shape theory on inverse systems, theory of strong shape and strong homology. Principal researcher in a number of research projects in topology. Has tought a number of undergraduate courses on mathematical analysis and topology and 13 different graduate courses. Member of the Croatian Society of mathematicians and Physicists (president 1971.-1974.), member of the American Mathematical Society (from 1958., from 1992. member emeritus). Member of the Croatian Academy of Scinces and Arts (Associated Member from 1975. and Member from 1988). Is also a member of Academia Europea (since 1990.) and a corresponding member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 2003).

Awards and decorations: Croatian State Award for Science Rudjer BoπkoviÊ (1964.), Work Medal with Golden Wreath (1975.), Award of the City of Zagreb (1978.), Croatian State Award for Life Achievements (1990.). Positions: Chairman of the Department of Mathematics of PMF (1961./62.), vicedean of PMF (1964./65.), president of the Faculty Council of PMF (1966./67.), dean of PMF (1974.-1976.), dean of the Department of Mathematics of PMF (1983./84.), Head of the Chair of Topology (1978.- 1982.), Chairman of Graduate Studies in Matematics (1960.-1971.), Editor in Chief of the journal Glasnik MatematiËki (1963.-1976.), Member of the Advisory Board of the international journal Topology and its Applications (since 1971.), Member of the Editorial Board of the journal Mediterranian Journal of Mathematics (since 2004).

Sibe Mardešić je maturiral v Splitu 1945 in dve leti služil v jugoslovanski mornarici. Teoretično matematiko je študiral na Fakulteti za naravoslovje in matematiko v Zagrebu, kjer je diplomiral 1950 in doktoriral 1957 z disertacijo Homološke lastnosti nekih funkcijskih prostorov. Na tej fakulteti je postal 1951 asistent, 1960 docent, 1962 izredni profesor in 1966 redni profesor. Upokojil se je 1991 in postal zaslužni profesor 1996. Bil je gostujoči član Instituta for Advanced Study v Princetonu (1957–59) in gostujoči profesor v Seattlu, WA (1965/66, 1987), Heidelbergu (1971/72), Pittsburghu, PA (1972/73), Salt Lake City-ju, UT in v Lexingtonu, KY (1977/78), L´Aquili (1979), Tsukubi (1981), Perugii (1985, 1990), Normanu, OK (1987) in Milanu (1993).

Njegovo področje raziskovanja je topologija, posebej teorija dimenzije, teorija oblik in homološka teorija. Objavil je 148 znanstvenih člankov, 39 strokovnih člankov in štiri knjige (med njimi Shape Theory (soavtor J. Segal, North Holland) in Strong shape and homology (Springer) Objavil je preko 450 recenzij za Mathematical Reviews in Zentralblatt für Mathematik. Glavni znanstveni prispevki so faktorizacijski izrek v teoriji dimenzij, izreki o zveznih slikah linearno urejenih kontinuov, zgraditev teorije oblik na inverznih sistemih, teorija krepkih oblik in krepke homologije.

Bil je glavni raziskovalec pri vrsti raziskovalnih projektov iz topologije. Predaval je vrsto dodiplomskih tečajev matematične analize in topologije in 13 različnih podiplomskih tečajev. Je član Hrvaškega društva matematikov in fizikov (njegov predsednik 1971–74), član Ameriškega matematičnega društva (od 1958, od 1992 zaslužni član). Je član Hrvaške akademije znanosti in umetnosti (izredni član od 1975, član od 1988), član Evropske akademije (Academia Europea) (od 1990), dopisni član Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti (od 2003).

Prejel je naslednje nagrade in priznanja: hrvaško državno nagrado za znanost Rudjer Bošković (1964), medaljo dela z zlatim vencem (1975), nagrado mesta Zagreba (1978) in hrvaško državno nagrado za življenjsko delo (1990). Imel je naslednje funkcije: predstojnik Oddelka za matematiko Prirodoslovno matematčne fakultete (PMF) v Zagrebu(1961/62), prodekan PMF (1964/65), predsednik Fakultetnega sveta PMF (1966/67), dekan PMF (1974–76), dekan Oddelka za matematiko PMF (1983/84), predstojnik Katedre za topologijo (1978-82), predstojnik podiplomskega študija matematike (1960–71). Bil je glavni urednik revije Glasnik matematički (1960–71). Je član uredniškega odbora revije Topology and its Applications (od 1971) in član uredniškega odbora revije Mediterranian Journal of Mathematics (od 2004).
