Nicod, Jean

Jean Nicod (rojen 25. marca 1923 v kraju Vesoul, departma Haute-Saône), geomorfolog, dr. litt., profesor fizične geografije (v pokoju) na univerzi Aix-Marseille II in Inštitutu za geografijo v mestu Aix-en-Provence (Francija). Gimnazijo je obiskoval v rojstnem Vesoulu (do 1940), 1941–44 je bil študent na Faculté des arts univerze v Nancyju in 1944 postal magister geografije. Kot promoviran za univerzitetnega »agrégé« iz geografije (1947 v Parizu) je poučeval na gimnazijah v Nancyju in Marseillu, 1953–55 je bil raziskovalec v okviru C.N.R.S. (Nacionalni center za znanstvene raziskave), vodja Centra za pedagoško dokumentacijo v Marseillu ter asistent in višji asistent na fakultetah v mestih Aix-en-Provence in Nica.
1967 je na Faculté des arts (Aix-en-Provence) uspešno zagovarjal državno tezo »Morfološke raziskave v apnenčasti Basse-Provence« (na njej je pričel delati 1947, mentor je bil prof. Jules Blache). Postal je profesor fizične geografije na Oddelku za geografijo (Aix-en-Provence) in ostal tam do upokojitve 1992, kot zaslužni profesor. 1994 mu je bil podeljen naslov častnega doktorja Šlezijske univerze v Katowicah, 2002 pa je bil izvoljen za dopisnega člana SAZU.
V okviru raziskav Provanse se je J. Nicod posebej zanimal za tamkajšnje pomembne kraške oblike in kraško hidrologijo. Ko je postal profesor, je nadaljeval z raziskovanjem kraških pojavov, bil je vodja skupine C.N.R.S. »Razvoj krasa v sredozemskem in alpskem okolju«, usmerjal svoje doktorande na številna kraška ozemlja v Franciji ter poleg drugih tudi v Libanon, Maroko ter na Madagaskar. S prof. K.-H. Pfeffejem z univerze v Tübingenu je vodil skupni program Procope (Aix-en-Provence – Tübingen) o razkrajanju dolomita (1987–90). Osnoval je Francosko krasoslovno zvezo (A.F.K.) in bil njen prvi predsednik (1977–86). V tem okviru je bil pobudnik več bilateralnih okroglih miz o krasu (v Švici, Belgiji, Nemčiji, Maroku, Veliki Britaniji, na Poljskem, v Španiji), tudi francosko-slovenske 1991. Bil je med ustanovitelji (1983) in izdajatelji Karstologije, francoske revije za znanstveno krasoslovje.
Raziskave J. Nicoda so bile usmerjene predvsem v geomorfologijo in hidrologijo krasa. V Provansi so bila najpomembnejša vprašanja razvoj površinskih oblik (vrtače, kraška polja...) v zvezi z geomorfološkim razvojem in paleoklimatskimi razmerami, razkrajanje dolomita, kraški izviri in ugotavljanje današnje denudacije s pomočjo hidrokemijskih analiz. Kasneje se je posvečal tudi drugim kraškim območjem in vprašanjem: krasu v sadri, rudnikom v paleokrasu v Franciji in po Evropi, podedovane tropske površinske oblike ter odlaganju lehnjaka. Kot geograf se je v zvezi s krasom zanimal tudi za vprašanja v zvezi s človekom, kot so: agrarne reforme na kraških območjih, uporaba kraških izvirov skozi zgodovino, jamska bivališča v lehnjaku, jezovi na krasu ... Med svojim raziskovalnim delom se je še posebej zanimal za Dinarski kras, kjer je spoznal veliko novega ob pomoči J. Roglića ter slovenskih tovarišev z Inštituta za raziskovanje krasa v Postojni.
Izsledke svojih raziskav je J. Nicod objavil v nekaj knjigah, predvsem pa v številnih člankih.

Jean Nicod (Vesoul, Haute-Saône Department, March 25, 1923), Geomorphologist, Dr. Litt., Professor of physical Geography, (retired), University Aix-Marseille II, Institute of Geography, Aix-en Provence, France.
He was born in Haute-Saône and successively pupil in gymnasium of Vesoul (up to 1940) and student in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Nancy (1941-1944), Master of Geography (1944), “Agrégé” of the University (Geography, Paris 1947), teacher in gymnasiums at Nancy and Marseilles, research worker of C.N.R.S. (National Center of Scientific Research, 1953-55), head of Regional Center for Pedagogical Documentation at Marseilles, assistant then master-assistant at Faculties of Aix-en-Provence and Nice.
In 1967, he achevied his state thesis “Recherches morphologiques en Basse-Provence calcaire “ (begined in 1947 with Professor Jules Blache), and mantained in Faculty of Arts of Aix-en Provence. He was Professor of physical Geography in the Department of Geography of Aix-en-Provence, retired in 1992, and temporarily emeritus.
In his investigations in Provence, J. Nicod took particularly interest in the important karst forms and karstic hydrology of this area ; also, become professor, he continued his researches about the karst phenomena, managed a C.N.R.S team on the « Evolution karstique dans les milieux méditerranéens et alpins », conducted his doctorants in numerous karstic regions, in France, Lebanon, Morocco, Madagascar..., and coordinated with Professor K.H. Pfeffer (University of Tübingen) the Procope Program, Aix-en-Provence-Tübingen, on the dolomit weathering (1987-90).
He organised the formation of the A.F.K (French Association of Karstology) as first president (1977-86), and has participated to the publishing of “Karstologia”, the french review of scientific karstology since 1983.
The main research fields of J. Nicod are the karstic geomorphology and hydrology. In Provence he was been interested particularly in main problems : development of the landforms (dolines, poljes, ..) in context of geomorphological evolution and palaeoclimatic changes, dolomit weathering, spring flows, determination of present karstic denudation by hydrochemical analysis. Next his investigations are developed in other karst areas and special problems : gypsum karst, mines and palaeokarsts in France and Europa, inherited tropical landforms, travertine sedimentation. In connection with this researches and a geographer, he dedicated interested in various anthropic problems : agrarian landforms in karstic regions, historic uses of the springs, troglodytic caves in travertines, dams in karstic sites... In the course of his activities he was special interest to the Dinaric areas, which his knowledge are very profited from the training of Josip Roglić, the researches of his slovenian Colleagues and the help of the Karst Research Institut of Postojna.
The results of his research have been communicated on some books, and mostly in recent publications.
