Unger, Felix

Prof. Unger, born 1946, is since 1985 Director of the Universitätsklinik für Herzchirurgie, Paracelsus Medizinische Universität Salzburg. He graduated at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Medicine in 1971, has been appointed 1978 as Assistant Professor and 1983 as full Professor for Surgery. His specific interest has been in cardiac surgery. He published over 400 papers and 17 books. He had his basic training at the University of Vienna and 1974 in the United States. His main interest in research has been the heart replacement; he implanted the first artificial heart in Europe in 1986. In 1990 he founded with Cardinal König and Prof. Lobkowicz the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, which has today 1.300 members (www.euro-acad.eu). He is Director of the European Institute of Health. Prof. Unger is member of the most important Scientific Associations in his field as well as in many Academies of Sciences. He has received numerous awards and honorary degrees. Prof. Unger is married and has two children.
