Povh, Bogdan

Bogdan Povh (Belgrade, August 20, 1932) physicist em. Professor of Physics, Max-Planck-Institute of Nuclear Physics and University of Heidelberg, Germany.
He was born in Belgrade as son of Dr. Vjekoslav Povh and his wife Olga, both emigrants from Triest. In December 1936 the family moved to Ljubljana. After the high school graduation (Klasična gimnazija v Ljubljani) in 1950 he started physics studies at the University of Ljubljana. After obtaining his diploma in 1955 he spent one year in the compulsory service of the Yugoslav Army. Afterwards, from fall of 1956, he was assistant at J. Stefan Institute in Ljubljana. In 1957 married to Ana Križanič, Dipl. Ing. in Chemistry.
From Oct. 1957 to Dec. 1959 was working as a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, USA. He was working in the group of William Fowler, later Nobel Prize laureate, on production of elements in nuclear reactions in stars.
After half a year research fellow at the University of Freiburg in Germany (Measurement of the Delbruck scattering) he returned to Ljubljana where he was assistant at the J. Stefan Institute up to September 1962. In Dec. 1961he received his Ph.D. at the University of Ljubljana.
In Oct. 1962 he immigrated to Germany and started to work at the University of Freiburg. In 1964 habilitation for the development of a new method of measuring the angular momenta in nuclei.
In June 1965 he joined the physics faculty of the University of Heidelberg, first as associate professor and from Dec. 1966 as full professor. In 1968 he established a permanent experimental group in CERN/Geneva, Switzerland. In the following 25 years the group was working on spectroscopy of hypernuclei, low energy antiproton physics and deep inelastic scattering of muons off the nucleon. Part of the research program was done at the High Energy Laboratories KEK, Japan and Fermi Lab, USA.
In 1969/70 sabbatical year in CERN, fall term 1972/73 sabbatical at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, USA, and 1973/74 dean of the faculty of Physics and Astronomy, Heidelberg.
In 1975 became a director at the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, remaining by the University as \personlicher Ordinarius"and continuing lecturing. In the same year a corresponding member of the Slovenian Academy of Science and Arts.
Further sabbaticals CERN (1983/84), Los Alamos Nat. Laboratory, USA and visiting professor at the University of California at Berkeley, USA.
From 1978 editor and from 1989 to 1997 editor-in-chief of the of the Zeitschrift für Physik A, and up to 1999 editor-in-chief of the successor journal The European Physical Journal A.
Since 1972 up to his retirement he was member of several scientific and advisory committees at DESY, CERN, GSI, Berkeley Lawrence Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory and to the German Ministry of science.
Since September 2000 professor emeritus at Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics and the University of Heidelberg.
In 2005 he was awarded the Stern-Gerlach-Medal for his pioniering work on the spectroscopy of Hypernuclei.
The total number of publications about 450, in the last 20 years 380 with 14345 citations, however more than 80% within large collaborations. Below quoted publications have been done predominantly with his Ph.D. students.

Bogdan Povh (Beograd, August 20, 1932) fizik em. profesor fizike, Max-Planck-Institute für Kernphysik in Univerza v Heidelbergu, Nemčija.
Rojen je bil v Beogradu, oče dr. Vjekoslav Povh in mati Olga, oba izseljenca iz Trsta.
