He was born in Praha (Czech Republic). After high school graduation (Middle School of General Education = Gymnázium, Praha 4, Ohradní; 1969), he started his professional education at Faculty of Science, Charles University in Praha. He graduated in 1974 (by Diploma Thesis; Dipl.-Geol.) and continued in research assistantship at Department of Geology. In 1976 he defended RNDr. Thesis and in 1982 CSc. (PhD.) Thesis (Sedimentology of Devonian in the Tišnov Brunnides and the Brno Unit in the Tišnov area). During the stay at Department of Geology (1974–1978), he was involved also in education (practicals, excursions, mapping courses). In 1978, he worked for a short time as assistant in the Geological Institute of Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Praha, in 1979 as librarian in the National Library, Praha, in 1980–1982 he was informatics specialist in the Geological Library, Faculty of Science, Charles University, Praha. In 1982–1994 he joined Geoindustria (after 1992 GMS Praha), as Research Geologist, Senior Research Geologist (in 1992) and Exploration Manager (since 1992); here he was involved in economic geological projects especially on limestone and coal deposits in Czechoslovakia and abroad (geological expeditions in Libya, Iran). In 1994, he established consultation office (P. Bosák Earth Sciences Consulting), dealing mostly with natural resources, quarry reclamation, karstology and economic geology. In 1996, he won tender for position of Director, Institute of Geology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Since October 1996, he has been employee of this institution, as Director (1996–2004), 1st Deputy Director (since 2004) and Chairman of Executive Board (since 2007). In 1998, he defended his habilitation, and in 2004 he obtained degree of Professor of Earth Sciences (both in the Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warszawa, Poland). In 1990–2007, he performed specialized lectures (Basin Analysis, Principles of Karstology and Palaeokarstology) at Faculty of Science, Charles University, Praha; recently is member of Post-graduate study program Karstology in Nova Gorica University. Two his PhD. students successfully graduated.
His principle fields of research are: karstology; palaeokarstology; karst/cave geology and evolution; karst sediments; speleochronology; geomorphology; carbonate petrology and sedimentology; sedi¬mentology of terrestrial and marine siliciclastics; basin analysis; environmental geology and processes; natural re¬sources: utilization and protection; quarry reclamation. He is one of co-founder of palaeokarstology as an individual discipline within the karstology and speleology. In 1997, he started massive application of palaeomagnetism and magnetostratigraphy methods on cave deposits, together with broad international team, including Slovenian colleagues. He has broad international experience (research activities in Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Bulgaria, France, Ukraine, Iran, Libya, Republic of Korea, Kirghizstan, Kazakhstan, Bahamas). He is author or co-author of 4 books, 52 chapters in books, 95 original papers in reviewed journal, 418 shorter communications, proceeding articles, abstracts and 371 unpublished reports.
